Never Trust the Quiet Ones

So there we were, engrossed in the latest Harry Potter book (the third), when WHAM! JK hit us with another character. Peter Pettigrew. He's little, mousy, sneaky, shrunken, and possibly VERY important to Harry Potters future. What do I mean?

Well, as we all know, Pettigrew sold Harry’s parents to Lord Voldemort. He put the blame on Harry’s godfather, imprisoning him for twelve years. He did anything and everything to make Harry’s life a living hell. And what does Harry do? He saves Wormtail's life. This may seem like an innocent move. Harry didn’t want to see his fathers best friends become murderers... didn’t want his fathers best friend… and betrayer... to die. But it seems to me that JK wanted something more out of it, something big.

Pettigrew escaped that night, escaped and ran off to return Voldemort to his full potential... All because Harry saved his life. So of course, Harry had to go make himself feel better by asking Dumbledore if he really did cause the most evil wizard ever to come back. That’s where the biggest hint of where Wormtail’s future lies. The following is taken from pgs. 426 and 427 of "Prisoner of Azkaban" and is between Harry and Dumbledore. "Pettigrew owes his life to you... When one wizard saves another wizards life, it creates a certain bond between them...and I’m mistaken if Voldemort wants his servant in the debt of Harry Potter." "I don’t want a connection with Pettigrew!"... "This is magic at its deepest, its most impenetrable, Harry. But trust me...the time may come when you will be very glad you saved Pettigrew's life."

True, Pettigrew gave no indication of saving Harry’s life or anything heroic in the fourth book. In fact, he bound Harry to a tombstone and basically set him up for death. But he also wouldn’t meet Harry’s eyes. And Harry didn’t die that night. Pettigrew really didn’t have a chance to do anything earth shattering.

True, Pettigrew continued to be Voldemorts faithful slave in the fifth book, but he wasn’t there when Harry and Voldemort came face to face... again.

All this tells me that something big will happen, probably in the last book. My guess is that Harry will once again find himself Faced with Voldemort (Or Dumbledore, if you read my Dumbledore column), and Voldemort will make yet another attempt on Harry’s life. Pettigrew will either curse Voldemort (Dumbledore) or jump in front of the curse and let himself die so Harry can fulfill the prophecy.

All in all, I believe Peter Pettigrew will become very interesting and helpful to Harry. And that the next two books will be very interesting.
